Although regarded as a genius now, was not that much smarter than his peers. However he himself attributed his many achievements to 2 things:

• Intense curiosity about the world, how things work, why things work couple with intense self study
• The feeling of being an outsider, gave him the courage to go against the cultural and intellectual grain of the times back then

Einstein

Einstein had lots of mathematical talent, but also had similar characteristics to Da Vinci. He felt like an outsider and had a distrust of authority. And attributed his success to curiosity about the mundane things adults often dismiss, such as space and time.
